#117   "...for the joy that was set before him..."                                                             June 7, 2015

Hebrews 12:2:  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured
the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The “joy” that was set before the Lord Jesus Christ was being seated “at the right hand of the throne of God” after he had accomplished God’s Will during his first coming in his ministry on the earth.

Although none of us has done anything remotely resembling the accomplished work of the Lord Jesus Christ, we can certainly relate, in a small way perhaps, to what God reveals concerning His Son in this verse.  Nine months of pregnancy and long hours of labor are challenging, to say the least - but there is great joy with the arrival of a new baby.  Budgeting, saving, even pinching pennies for years and years can be difficult - but when the home is purchased, or the mortgage finally paid off, there can be quite a bit of joy.

The joy that his Father, the Lord God Almighty, had set before His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, was that he would be “set down at the right hand of the throne of God” after he accomplished the Will of his Father.  Christian religion would have us believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was just a man with an extreme martyr complex, who suffered and died simply for the sake of suffering and dying - but God’s Word is quite plain here, isn’t it?

God in His Word reveals to us that “the joy that was set before him” was quite clearly in the mind of the Lord Jesus Christ in the hours before his false arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane.

John 13:1:  Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out
of this world unto the Father,
[emphasis added]…

“His hour was come” refers to the time of the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus.  At this juncture, the Lord Jesus Christ knew that the time of his suffering and death had come.  But fixed in his mind as well was “the joy that was set before him;” that following his suffering and death, after God raised him from the dead, after his resurrection appearances,
“he should depart out of this world unto the Father” and would be “set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Just a little while after what is recorded in John 13:1, he spoke of “the joy that was set before him” to those who were with him.

John 14:12:  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and  greater works
than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father [emphasis added].

Clearly the Lord Jesus Christ knew and believed that he would be “set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  That was “the joy that was set before him.”  We might say, “He looked forward to it.”  He “endured the cross, despising the shame” and aren’t we thankful he did!  After all, he was the ONLY only begotten Son the One True God ever had.

We all are aware of other men or women with natural athletic abilities, for example, who devote their lives and discipline themselves so that they can achieve an athletic accomplishment.  When they do it, they’re lauded, applauded, looked up to and admired.

It seems to be difficult, though, for Christians to understand that the Lord Jesus Christ actually knew what he and he alone had the ability to accomplish and willingly devoted his life to accomplishing it - “for the joy that was set before him.”

John 13:3:  Jesus knowing [emphasis added] that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come
        from God, and went to God;

The Lord Jesus Christ IS the greatest man of all time and times.  He and he alone, “for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

And he’s coming back for us!!!!!!!!!!
