#121 Square One                                                                                              October 4, 2015

“Square one” is an idiom we use in English.  It means the point or place from which you start something or the place that you have to go back to and start over again because what you had previously tried to do didn’t work.

Most folks can remember many occasions and circumstances in their lives where they had to begin at square one or even go back to square one.  For instance, in traveling they might have turned right when they should have turned left.  Miles and miles later they realized they had to go back to square one - back to the starting point where they had made the wrong turn.  How much more daunting it would have been if there had not been a square one to return to and to start over.

For any human interested in salvation Romans 10:9 reveals square one.

Romans 10:9:  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God  hath raised him
from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Someone who has spent decades confessing their sins in hopes of saving themselves by their good works might well be offended at the simplicity of God’s Word here - but it’s still God’s Word.  If they want God’s salvation they have to come to God’s Word.  You can’t work for God’s salvation.  It’s a gift.

Ephesians 2:8:  For by grace are ye saved through faith [believing]; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Once you are saved, born again, a child of God, a saint, there is another great square one in God’s Revelation to His children.  It’s the place from which you start to really live as a son or daughter of God.

Romans 12:1,2:  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living  sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what  is
that  good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

For the carnal Christian the renewing of the mind to the Truth of God’s Word may sound too simple, even silly.  But for the Christian believer who wants to live more abundantly as a child of God - it is the key that unlocks the realities of the rights, privileges and abilities they received in the new birth - until the moment of the Gathering Together.  You simply learn God’s Word and you believingly think and act according to God’s Word.  If you begin each day on this square one from God’s Word you can move forward and grow as a son or daughter of the Lord God Almighty.  Those days then build one upon the other.  If your day doesn’t start right you can always go back to square one and begin to be transformed at any time.

1 John 3:1,2:  Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of  God: therefore
the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2  Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he  shall appear, we
shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Ephesians 1:3,4:  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual  blessings in
             heavenly places in Christ:
4  According as he [God] hath chosen us in him [the Lord Jesus Christ] before the foundation of the world, that we  should be holy
and without blame before him [God] in love:

Colossians 2:6 and 10:  As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
10  And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Lest we forget, there would not be any square one for anyone, believer or unbeliever, to start from or to return to, if not for the One True God and His wonderful Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who accomplished redemption and salvation for humanity.

John 3:16:  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should  not perish, but
             have everlasting life.

The Lord Jesus Christ explained the greatest “square one” in Matthew 22:37.

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
