#73 A New Year's List                                                                            January 1, 2009

It’s new year resolutions time again.

Time for some to make their self condemnation/resolution lists according to the current worldly fashion.

After all, eleven months and twenty four days from now “ole saint nick” will be checking his condemnation list.  Not once but twice.  And he’s gonna know who’s been naughty and nice and no one’s ever going to quite make it.  New year’s day next year, it starts all over again.  See how it all fits together?  Just like a gerbil, endlessly spinning that little wheel around year after year.

We’ve got no self condemnation list.  We were DQ’d by the new birth.  Can’t participate.  We’ve tossed our wheel in the trash.

Hope? Yes!  Oh yes, we’ve got hope.  Hope that this could be the moment and if not this moment the next or the next or the next moment as the Julian calendar ticks by.  Hope that our Lord Jesus Christ himself, personally, not an emissary, not a representative, but himself, personally, shall descend from the spiritual realm with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first and then we, along with all the born again ones across the globe, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Great expectations?  Yes!  Oh yes, we’ve got great expectations.  We have the Lord God Almighty, the One True God, the Creator of the universe as our Heavenly Father.  His Son, the man Christ Jesus, is our lord, not some buffoonish man or the god of this world.  We’ve got spiritual life created in us and we can live it.  And we’ve got a great, big, thick book that our Heavenly Father personally authored so that we could know Him and what He has done, can do now, and will do in the future.

Great expectations for the new year?  We certainly should have great expectations.  Why shouldn’t we?  My memory may not be that great, but I can remember two thousand and eight.
Year filled with joy and thanksgiving!
Countless messages from God, Himself!
Countless answers to prayers !
Were there pressures, problems, heartaches, headaches and the like?  Of course.  This ain’t heaven we’re living in.  But there was always God and His love and His heavenly help and His deliverance.

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to make a list for the new year.  Maybe call it a Christian believer’s list.  Maybe hum a little song while we’re making it.

“I am resolved no longer to linger,
Charmed by the world’s delight.
Things that are higher, things that are nobler,
These have allured my sight.
I will hasten to him, hasten so glad and free…….”
“This world is not my home, I’m just a passing thru.
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue.
The hope that I now have is wonderfully sure,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.”

Maybe call it a Philippians 4:6 list.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Maybe call it a I John 5:14 and 15 list.
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

After all, we know what God’s Will is.
Philippians 4:19:
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

We know what He’s able to do.
II Corinthians 9:8:
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

Nothing wrong with making a list of a few prayerful requests for the upcoming year.  Nothing wrong with making a few plans in light of God’s Will, His ability and His willingness.  Nothing wrong with planning your life according to God’s Will for a moment, a minute, an hour, a day, even a whole year.

Why not make a new year list?
