#92 How Are You ThinkingToday?                                                        October 2, 2011

Ours is a feeling based culture and society.

How are you feeling today?  How do you feel about that?  You look like you feel good.  I feel great today.  I feel like doing this.  I don’t feel good about that decision.

What we feel is taken for what is real.  We have been educated to trust our feelings — do what you feel is right.  Feelings sell products, elect politicians, punish the innocent and free the guilty.  Feelings govern marriage and feelings dictate divorce.

Nothing wrong with feelings but they are to be enjoyed not enthroned, experienced not enshrined.  Feelings are the indirect, emotional response to information received by one or more of the five senses — not a direct response, an indirect response.  Feelings are the result of what you think and how you think.  They follow mental conclusions and/or physical actions.

Feelings are like water overflowing onto the floor from a bathtub where the faucet has been left to run.  You can stand in the water and wring your hands, even take a towel and try to mop it up.  But if you want to deal with the water on the floor you have to turn off the faucet.  Even so, if you want to change the way you feel, you have to change the way you think.  For the Christian believer, that is paramount.

Romans 12:2:
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

“The renewing of your mind” is the key that opens the door to being transformed as a Christian believer.  When you hear God’s Word and believe it, receive God’s gift of holy spirit and speak in tongues, then you know that you know that God is your Heavenly Father.  You’re His child.  An eternity with Him is now your birthright.  You receive the new birth but you don’t receive a new brain, a new mind.  When you receive God’s gift of holy spirit you will not act differently unless you think differently.  You won’t feel differently unless you learn to think and act according to God’s Word.

One of the reasons the Christian experience for so many, is such a frustrating failure, is because they want to feel like a Christian believer but are unwilling to learn to think and act like a Christian believer according to God’s Word.  They don’t renew their minds according to God’s Word — and it’s so simple.  You take the new information from God’s Word and you learn It, you put It in the mind that you already have and begin to make (that’s right, make) yourself think the way God’s Word tells you to think.

Philippians 4:8:
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things [emphasis added].

As you begin to renew your mind will you begin to be transformed?  Yes!  Will your feelings begin to change?  Yes!  Does it take work?  Yes!  Is it challenging?  Yes!  Is it worth it?  That depends on what you want, how you want to grow up as God’s child.  If you just want to carry your Bible with you to fellowship and learn to say “Bless you” at the appropriate times, well…………..  But if you want to be transformed, you have to begin to put God’s Word into your old mind (the mind you already had at the time you were born again and spoke in tongues).  Read It.  Learn It.  Be taught It.  Then once God’s Word is in your mind, you have to keep It there.  Think what God’s Word says consistently, believe It and begin to act on It and stay at It.

For the believer it is not a question of feelings.  It’s not, “How are you feeling today?”  The question we should ask ourselves and each other is, “How are you thinking today?”  Are you thinking God’s Word?  Are you acting according to God’s Word?

How are you thinking today?
