#80 The Power of Truth                                                                         August 1, 2010

I see a bumper sticker now and again that reads, “Speak Truth To Power.”  I can usually tell from the other stickers that surround it, “Save the Planet,” “Love your Mother,” that the truth being referred to is nothing more than an alternative, political/societal perspective.  Furthermore, the power to whom this political/societal perspective is to be spoken is left to the reader to discern.

Political/societal perspectives or ideologies are not truth.  They may be liberal, moderate, or conservative;  capitalistic, socialistic, or communistic, but they are not true.  What is true never changes from being true.  Facts are not truth.  They originate from the perspective of humans or they are engendered by humans as they observe and interact with or in their environment.  Facts may be accurate and proven or even indisputable, but they are not truth.

Truth originates from God and God alone.  Truth is eternal.  It never changes.  It spans all of time, supersedes any and all circumstances.  There is only one Truth for all times and that is God’s Will for all humankind.  He brought the reality of His Will into availability for all humankind by the accomplished work of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.  That’s the Good News of the Gospel.  That Gospel, that Good News, is the Truth and it is Power.

Romans 1:16 [emphasis and explanation added]:
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of [concerning] Christ: for it [the Gospel, the Good News of God’s Will in the accomplished work of the Lord Jesus Christ] is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

The Gospel, God’s wonderful Word, is the Truth and it is Power.  It’s “the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.”

Every Christian believer has the right, the privilege, the responsibility, to speak and to share and to communicate the Gospel, the Good News of God’s Will in the accomplished work of the Lord Jesus Christ.  That Gospel is “the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.” We have that right, that privilege, that responsibility, because God gave it to us.

II Corinthians 5:18,19 [emphasis added]:
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

It is the Word of Reconciliation, the Gospel, that enables us to carry out the Ministry of Reconciliation.  God’s Word, the Good News of God’s Will in the accomplished work of the Lord Jesus Christ, is “the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” and that salvation is the reconciliation.

What Words of Truth, Words of Power we have to speak and to share and to communicate.  What a privileged responsibility we have in the Ministry of Reconciliation.  Why not speak the Power of the Truth to anyone and everyone?  Why not simply speak the Power of Truth?
